New IMAX Screen Arrives In Chattanooga

If anyone reported seeing a giant centipede in downtown Chattanooga on Wednesday, it might have been the construction crew at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater. The new six-story IMAX screen was delivered to the theater Wednesday afternoon after a multi-day trip from Canada on an 18-wheeler. Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor dark of night could keep this oversized load from arriving on time.

Workers unloaded and uncrated the screen, which measures 89 feet wide and 66 feet tall when unrolled. The crew carried the 900 pound bundle into the lobby of the theater, looking like a giant centipede crossing the street at the corner of Chestnut Street and Aquarium Way.

The screen will stay in the lobby until Friday when it will be moved into the theater and raised onto the giant frame.

The Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater will reopen on Feb. 1, with an 11-day film festival featuring eight 3D films that have been re-mastered for the new IMAX with Laser format. Film fans can purchase the new Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Club Pass to see all eight films and an unlimited number of 45-minute 3D films for one full year for just $40.
