The Lee University Track & Field teams began their 2016 indoor seasons with 11 top-four performances at the Emory Crossplex Invitational. The Flames finished third out of 18 non-NCAA Division I schools, while the Lady Flames were 12th out of 19. The event was hosted by Emory University at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Lee will return to the Birmingham Crossplex on Jan. 31 to participate in the Privateer Invitational hosted by the University of New Orleans.

“This was a solid start to the season,” said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. “A lot of teams have been competing for three or four weeks. We will be in a better place after we get a few competitions under our belts.”

Josiah Brooks tallied three of the Flames’ eight top-four performances. He finished first in the 400 meter dash and third in the long jump and triple jump. The freshman’s winning time of 48.72 eclipsed the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Championships by 0.06 seconds.

The time needed for automatic qualification is 47.30. He recorded a distance of 6.70 meters in the long jump and 14.14 meters in the triple jump.

Joining Brooks with top-four performances were his brother Justin Brooks, Terris Elliott and Seth Eagleson. Justin Brooks was second in the 400 meter dash (48.84) and third (22.23) in the 200 meter dash. He also finished ninth (6.28 meters) in the long jump.

“Josiah and Justin had an outstanding day,” said Morgan. “They dominated the 400, running the 14th and 17th-fastest time in Division II this year.”

Elliott was third (1:55.49) in the 800 meter run and fourth (4:21.15) in the mile. “Terris had two great races. He looks very strong right now and has a great shot at hitting an NCAA standard this indoor season,” said Morgan.

Eagleson finished second in the 5000 meter run with a new school record of 15:12.67. Mike Walker set the previous record (15:24) in 2011.

“Seth got stuck running by himself and had a great solo effort. He should have no problem going under 15 minutes in his next outing with better competition,” added Morgan.

Jovan Jones and Stephen Cannon participated in the 60 and 200 meter dashes. Jones had a time of 7.23 in the 60 meter and finished 14th (23.03) in the 200 meter, while Cannon placed 20th (23.30) in the 200 meter and recorded a 7.20 mark in the 60 meter dash.

Hunter Goforth stopped the clock at 7.36 in the 60 meter dash. Goforth also participated in the long jump and placed sixth with a distance of 6.33 meters.

Harold Smith finished ninth (4:26.33) and 13th (2:01.97) in the mile and 800 meter run, respectively. Brandon Raleigh was 20th (4:40.79) and Alex Carter finished 27th (4:47.01) in the mile. Davis Moore recorded a time of 2:05.11 (25th) and Garret Flores was 37th (2:10.56) in the 800 meter run.

Matt Jenkins placed sixth in the 5000 meter run with a mark of 15:56.43. Gus Whitman was 13th (9:16.77), while Colson Hagan was right behind at 15th (9:17.59) in the 3000 meter run.

Christian Smith was the lone Lee competitor in the shot put and weight throw. He placed sixth in the shot put (12.64 meters) and 20th (8.38 meters) in the weight throw.

For the Lady Flames, Audrey Smith and Adrian Martin combined for three top-three performances.
Smith placed second in the 3000 meter run with a new school record of 10:27.85. The previous record of 10:30 was set by Maggie Opelt in 2011.

“Audrey ran a great tactical race,” said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. “She executed the race strategy perfectly.”

Martin finished third in the 60 and 200 meter dashes. The junior posted a time of 7.79 in the 60 meter distance and stopped the clock at 25.60 in the 200 meter dash.

“Adrian usually gets a slow start each season, but she is much faster at this point than she was last year,” added Morgan. “She should pick up a couple qualifying times next weekend.”

The automatic qualifying time for the 60 meter dash is 7.42 and for the 200 meter dash is 24.00, while the provisional standards are 7.73 and 25.06.

Savannah Ratcliff, Amy Carpenter and Logan Hernandez joined Smith in the 3000 meter run. Ratcliff was 15th (11:20.13) with Carpenter right behind at 17th (11:23.50). Hernandez crossed the finish line at 11:39.85 (23rd).

Kiley Brock joined Martin in the 60 and 200 meter dash fields. Brock recorded a time of 8.18 in the 60 meter and finished 29th (27.88) in the 200 meter dash. Kaitlynn Kincer had a time of 9.21 in the 60 meter and Amanda Hegarty placed 30th (27.91) in the 200 meter. Kincer finished 23rd in the long jump with a distance of 4.15 meters.

Hegarty joined Emily Bryan and Monica Allison in the 400 meter dash. Hegarty placed 19th (1:04.39), Bryan was 21st (1:04.41) and Allison was 25th (1:06.63). Bryan and Allison also competed in the 60 meter hurdles. Bryan placed 12th with a mark of 10.09, while Allison was 13th (10.25).

Brianna Prugh took on the 800 meter distance and placed 19th with a time of 2:32.67. Mackenzie Mayer ran the mile in 6:03.87 for 27th.
