A sprinkler malfunction at the new UTC library damaged 300,000 books.

Officials said a leak in the sprinkler happened around 10 p.m. last Monday, but the cause of the malfunction was unknown.

Librarians are examining each of the damaged pieces to see if they can be saved or need to be replaced.

Officials were not sure of the cost of damages yet.

The new $48 million state-or-the-art library opened just a year ago.
