Elizabeth Appling, Erlanger Health System’s chief diversity officer, was recognized by a leading healthcare publication, Becker’s Hospital Review, as one of 15 chief diversity officers to know.
In the January 6, 2016 article, Kelly Gooch reports on how hospitals and health systems are working to strengthen their approach to diversity and inclusion by creating more chief diversity officer positions.
“When looking for these chief diversity officers, health systems look for candidates from broader backgrounds within healthcare as well as candidates from outside the industry,” wrote Ms. Gooch.

Ms. Appling has been employed with Erlanger Health System for over 20 years. As Erlanger’s chief diversity officer, she provides leadership and oversight in efforts to create and sustain a respectful and inclusive culture. She serves on numerous community and national organizations. Ms. Appling is a member of Institute For Diversity in Health Management, Tennessee Hospital Association serving as a Board Member on the Diversity Committee, Board Member of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, previously served as a member of La Paz Promotora Committee, Global Leadership Diversity Council, Chair of the Global Leadership Advanced Study Group, past Board Member of the Sanctuary, a non-profit organization, and Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce Diversity Council.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Development, and a master's degree in Business Administration from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee. She is also a recent graduate of the 2012-2013 Disparities Leadership Program, The Disparities Solutions Center, Massachusetts General Hospital.
