Chattanoogan.com is issuing another book with classic photos richly illustrating Chattanooga's past.
Paul Hiener's Historic Chattanooga Photos is scheduled to be ready Oct. 24.
Mr. Hiener, a longtime Chattanooga printer and lifelong resident, collected over 3,000 historic pictures of his beloved hometown. He made some of the photos available through a five-volume set called Chattanooga Yesterday and Today.
The Hiener family in April 1985 donated the more than 3,000 historical Chattanooga photographs in his collection to the Chattanooga Public Library. They were eventually cataloged and are now viewable on the library's website.
Family members said they considered getting the photos appraised and offering them for sale. However, they said it was decided that Paul Hiener would have wanted them made available to the public for all to enjoy. By then, the volumes of Chattanooga Yesterday and Today were long out of print and were collectors' items. Chattanooga Library officials graciously agreed to allow Chattanoogan.com access to the scans of the Hiener collection so this volume could be made possible.
There is a large group of pictures depicting Chattanooga in the Civil War and many of the floods that periodically inundated the town. Another special collection was of the Fairyland development on Lookout Mountain. Many others show once-familiar Chattanooga businesses and other landmarks.
This book, which is fully indexed, is a perfect companion to The Remarkable Stokes Collection previously published by Chattanoogan.com.
An edition of 1,500 copies of the 253-page Hiener book is being printed by College Press at Collegedale.
The photo book, which includes over 700 photos, is in an 11x8 1/2 format with a soft cover.
It was edited by John Wilson and layout was by Jenny Gienapp.
The price of the book is $35, which includes the sales tax.
This will reserve a copy or copies for later pickup at Zarzour's Restaurant on Rossville Avenue behind Fire Hall #1, which is on Main Street on the Southside.
