Dr. William A. Shelton, Jr., 73, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

He was born in Farner, Tn., but Chattanooga was home for most of his life. He was a graduate of Red Bank High School.

Dr. Shelton was a veteran. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Vietnam with the 219th Medical Detachment.

A well-known endodontist in Chattanooga, Dr. Shelton received his pre-dental education at UTC, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and several honorary fraternities. He received a dental degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis and then a degree in endodontics and a master’s degree in dental science from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry.

Dr. Shelton was a member of the Tennessee Endodontic Society, the American Endodontic Society, and the Southern Endodontic Study Group. He held all the chairs in the Third District Dental Society and received the TDA Fellowship Award.

As a deacon at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, Dr. Shelton co-taught a high school Sunday school class. In later years, he and his family became members of First Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid hiker, camper, boater, tennis player, fisherman, kayaker, amateur archeologist, knife collector, and photographer. He was also a little league baseball, softball, and soccer coach.

The family thanks Linda Simpson, the staff of the CKC, and the Memorial EMS team for their compassionate care for Dr. Shelton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Juanita Shelton and niece, Robin Shelton.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Claudia Crowe Shelton; his brother, Dr. Robert Shelton (Annette) and niece, LeAnn; his children, Jennifer Mastin-Brown and William A. Shelton III; as well as his three grandchildren, Callie and Cooper Mastin, and Owen Shelton. “Da,” as his grandchildren called him, was much-loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

The family will have a private graveside service on Friday, Octob. 14.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Chattanooga Kidney Center (CKC). There will no visitation at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
