Family Fun Day At Sculpture Fields Features Blue Trees, Kites And Picnicking

  • Saturday, October 22, 2016

At Family Fun Day at Sculpture Fields on Saturday, visitors took part in the city-wide Blue Trees Project, witnessed the planting of two more trees for the park’s Commemorative Forest and enjoyed exploring the 33-acre field that has sprouted with 33 monumental-sized sculptures, including the newest installation, “Streamers,” by sculptor Ruth Migdal.

Chattanooga Police officers also planted a willow oak tree in Sculpture Field's Commemorative Forest to honor CPD's Suzette Carpenter, who recently died from complications resulting from cancer.

Public Art Chattanooga is hosting world-renowned artist Konstantin Dimopoulos for a project called The Blue Trees. Over six weeks, Dimopoulos will lead the community in coloring trees a vibrant blue in select locations throughout the city. Dimopoulos uses biologically safe, water-based paint.

The Blue Trees project is not a permanent alteration. Dimopoulos uses a water-based colorant, which is biologically safe and will "change through the cycle of nature" over the course of a year.

Dimopoulos has led the project in more than 20 cities across the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

The Blue Trees project seeks to raise awareness of our city's natural assets, educate people about the importance of trees and demonstrate the role art plays in highlighting environmental, social and political issues. In addition, the project will help engage Chattanooga residents through volunteering and educational family fun days.

Also on hand was Chuck Jones with the Chattanooga Kite Club who demonstrate how to build and fly kites. Food trucks from Griffin’s Hot Dogs and California Burrito were also on hand for picnicking.
