  • Saturday, October 22, 2016
DEMOREST, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at Piedmont College. The Lady Scots fell in the opener against host Piedmont in five sets (19-25, 13-25, 25-21, 25-10, 15-11) before knocking off Huntingdon 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17).

With the split, Covenant moves to 16-12 overall and 10-3 in the USA South. Only the Piedmont match counted towards conference standings as the Lady Scots' earlier contest at Huntingdon on Oct. 6 was a USA South tilt.

MATCH ONE: Piedmont 3, Covenant 2

Covenant took the first two sets and looked poised to pick up another USA South victory, but Piedmont roared back and took the final three sets to eke out a victory over the Lady Scots 3-2 (19-25, 13-25, 25-21, 25-10, 15-11).

It is the second consecutive year that the two programs have played a five-set match at Cave Arena.
Last season, Covenant rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to win in five.

Covenant fell behind early in the first set, but rallied back midway through to tie the match at 16 apiece after a combined block from Morgan Opgenorth and Ginny Moore. The streak continued for the Lady Scots as they ended the set on a 9-3 run, capped by a Ginny Moore kill, to take a 1-0 match lead.

In the second, Covenant had its highest hitting percentage of the match at .250 with 12 kills. The Lady Scots used that efficient attacking to take a 9-2 lead in the frame after a kill from Allie Jakes. Covenant led throughout the set to gain a 2-0 match lead.

Piedmont would begin its rally in the third set. The Lions pulled away from Covenant late in the set to take a 25-21 win. Piedmont never trailed in the fourth set and cruised to the win to send the match into a fifth and deciding set.

Again, it was Piedmont taking an early lead in the fifth but Covenant would slice its deficit to 7-6 after a Piedmont error. The Lions scored seven of the next eight points to grab a 14-7 lead and would hold off a late Covenant rally for a 15-11 win and a match victory.

Ginny Moore registered a double-double with 15 kills and 22 digs for Covenant, while Schuyler Moore had 41 assists and 18 digs. Hannah Harris totaled nine kills and two total blocks and Jakes added eight kills. Opgenorth led all player with six block assists to go along with five kills. Jessica Seehorn contributed six kills and 10 digs and Hannah Stewart collected 18 digs.

Piedmont (16-10, 7-6 USA South) had three players in double figure kills led by Kaitlyn Loesel’s 13. Anna Wright and Amanda Trotter had 11 kills apiece. Lainey Choiniere tallied 39 assists and 12 digs.

Covenant rebounded after a tough loss to defeat Huntingdon 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17) in the final match of the afternoon in Demorest.

But in the final two sets, Covenant asserted itself on the attack to win both frames. The Lady Scots had 10 kills in the third before producing 16 kills and a .467 percentage in the fourth set.
