The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 1-0 at UNCG Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season. The Mocs end the year at 6-10-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the Southern Conference and tie the Spartans (7-10-2, 4-4-1 SoCon) for fifth in the standings.
“It was another tough result,” Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. “We did, however, battle hard and we played well in moments. We are not far off.”
UNCG’s Lauren Daniels headed in her first goal of the year in the 61st minute on a cross from Cienna Rideout for the only score of the match.
The Spartans edged the Mocs 13-11 on shots, but Chattanooga had an 8-5 advantage on shots on goal.
Junior Peyton McCollum (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) had three shots for the Mocs with two on goal with eight others getting a shot in the match. Freshman keeper Melia Correa (Clarksville, Tenn.) had four saves for UTC with two saves in each period.
Melanie Spensiero had a game-high four shots while four Spartans had two shots each including Daniels, who had two on goal.
“We have put ourselves in a good situation where we get a bye to the quarterfinals, which is very important,” McKinney said. “We will work extremely hard this week in training to prepare for Sunday.”
Chattanooga pulled the sixth-seed for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament and will travel to Macon, Ga., to take on the third-seeded Mercer Bears Sunday, October 30 at 4 p.m. The Mocs beat Mercer 2-1 at home earlier this month. Follow all the action at GoMocs.com.
