Collegedale Getting Commercial/Residential Development On 100 Acres; New Collegedale Commons Shaping Up

With no one in opposition, at a public hearing Monday night, Collegedale Commissioners approved on a second and final vote to rezone property on Apison Pike for a large new development. North American Development Group is planning a commercial/residential development on 100 acres where Meridian Drive intersects Apison Pike. The property is zoned and planned for commercial use with a Planned Commercial Development overlay, which will allow housing. In addition to the commercial buildings, 180 residences have been proposed for the location.

A multi-use community project named Collegedale Commons is taking shape on eight acres just south and adjacent to the city hall. When complete, it will have a pavilion, a shade market, bathroom pavilions, soundstage, outdoor amphitheater, a covered market space and in the long term, a community center/event hall. The commissioners passed a resolution that prohibits the service and consumption of alcohol on this property during any city-sponsored event. All parks and greenways in Collegedale are already alcohol free, said City Manager Ted Rogers. The vote Monday night pertained only to the Commons for events sponsored by the city. This rule will not apply to private events.

The commissioners unanimously approved entering into an agreement with the Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority (WWTA) that should prevent overflows of the pumping station in Collegedale.

Mayor Katie Lamb appointed Jerry Moody, an experienced planner with the city of Chattanooga, to fill a vacancy on the Collegedale Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The Collegedale Fall Festival is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Veterans Park. This year will mark 100 years since the community was founded. October is also significant because the name Collegedale was given to the area in October, 1960. This year the festival will have a stage with live music provided by the jazz band from Southern Adventist University. There will be booths with activities for small children, an antique car show and food vendors. In case of heavy rain, the location will move to the parking lot of the Community Church at 4995 Swinyar Dr.
