Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a free, one hour program exploring the struggle between David Crockett and fellow Tennessean, President Andrew Jackson over Indian Removal on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m., at Moccasin Bend National Archeological District.
Parking for the program will be at the Gateway Site off Hamm Road (10 Hamm Road in Chattanooga). “Special Event” signs will also be posted along Manufacturers and Hamm roads to help guide visitors to event parking. Please bring a portable chair and a water bottle.
Program overview:
Sometimes, when you stand up for what you know to be right, it can seem as though you are looking into the face of an overwhelming giant. In 1830, a slender Tennessean broke ranks with his president and former commanding general. Standing up in the great, circular chamber of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., Congressman David Crockett, famous for his exploits on the frontier, stood in opposition to President Jackson and his Indian Removal Act. As he closed his remarks, Crockett reminded his colleagues and the nation that “if this [taking of American Indian land] was not oppression with a vengeance, he did not know what was.” We encourage you to visit and participate in this program as we explore the loyalty, or lack thereof, of these famous Tennesseans during Indian Removal.
