  • Friday, October 7, 2016
Carl Simakoff and Josh Brower each scored two goals to lead the Covenant men's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Huntingdon in USA South action on Friday afternoon at Scotland Yard.

Covenant improves to 2-8-2 overall with the win and 2-4 inside the USA South. Huntingdon drops to 2-8-1 on the year and 1-5 in league play.

The scoring started early on for Covenant as Simakoff scored the first of his two-goal afternoon in the sixth minute as he dribbled through the box and found the back of the net from short distance to make it 1-0.

The Scots would tally two goals within two minutes of each other later in the half.
Jesse Riggs collected his team-leading fifth goal of the season with a header in the 26th minute, assisted by Caleb Bureau, to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. In the 28th minute, it was Brower's turn as he received a pass from Riggs and powered his shot into the net from just inside the box making it 3-0.

Huntingdon got a goal late in the first half from Mac Puller to get within 3-1 at the half.

In the second half, Covenant put the match out of reach. Simakoff dribbled all the way through the box and scored from the top of the 6-yard area for his second goal to make it 4-1 in the 48th minute. The goal was Simakoff's fourth of the year. Brower then added his second score of the day as he possessed a throw-in from Henry Paris and scored from eight yards out for a 5-1 advantage. Brower's goals were numbers two and three for the season.

The scoring was capped by Matt Morefield's first collegiate goal in the 67th minute as his shot from beyond the box got past Huntingdon keeper Dakota Gruzdas. Riggs also picked up the assist on Morefield's score.

Paul Lemay and Jonathan Crossman combined to allow just one goal at the net for the Scots. Lemay made one save, while Huntingdon starting keeper Eathan Small made four. Covenant held an 18-7 shot edge in the match and took seven corner kicks.

The six goals are a season-high for the Scots and the most since defeating William Peace 9-1 on Oct. 25, 2014.
