Eighth graders at Signal Mountain Middle School raised $2,714 for the Red Wolf program at the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center. This is the largest donation given to the program by any school, according to Tish Gailmard, wildlife director at the nature center.
She said funds raised will be used to help pay veterinarian bills, new medicines, and updates to the wolf enclosures.
The Red Wolves living in the Wildlife Wanderland at Reflection Riding are on loan from the US Fish and Wildlife Services. They are part of the federal Species Survival Plan for the Red Wolves, which are the eighth most endangered animals in the world.
Eighth graders visited the red wolves and learned about them during an extensive science project that culminated with a silent auction of gift baskets that students filled to raise money for the Red Wolf Program.
