Though jazz legend Duke Ellington is best known for his ability to blend melodies and rhythms into swinging tunes, the American musician also composed numerous classical pieces.

Some of those lesser known Ellington tunes will be performed in the upcoming “Classics with a Jazz Tinge” concert on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Creative Arts Guild. The event is the next in Dalton State’s fall concert series.

Also featuring the works of composers William Walton, and George Gershwin, this concert will be performed by members of the Rome Symphony Orchestra, led by Dr. Sam Baltzer.

"The title of this concert invokes the jazz connection, but I'm most excited that this is music that's not often heard,” said Dr. Ellie Jenkins, associate professor of music and concert organizer. “These are important composers with wonderful voices, but this music is not often played just because it's a little off the beaten track of 'classical' music."

“Classics with a Jazz Tinge” is made possible by a grant from the Dalton State Foundation to the School of Liberal Arts and admission is $10 or free to those with a Dalton State ID.
