The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency announced on Tuesday that Sevier Co. Wildlife Officer David Sexton has been promoted to a sergeant in District 41.

Mr. Sexton, a native of east Knoxville and Carter High School graduate, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries from the University of Tennessee in 1990.  He joined TWRA in September of 1992 as the Grainger Co. Wildlife Officer and later transferred to Sevier Co. in 1997.  Throughout his career, Sgt. Sexton has been named officer of the year in his work area on three occasions and in recent years, has been awarded the statewide TWRA Wildlife Officer of the Year title.

His position as the Sevier Co. Wildlife Officer has brought about a diversity of duties, especially considering that much of the county lies in or next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  “Black bears have been the biggest responsibility I’ve had in Sevier County,” said Mr. Sexton.  “From answering calls on bear-human conflicts to inspecting hunters, bears have kept me busy.”  He also notes that teaching and coordinating the TWRA Hunter Education program throughout the county and keeping the boaters of Douglas Lake safe have consumed a great portion of his time.

Sgt. Sexton’s new position as a District 41 sergeant him give him responsibilities as a first level supervisor of officers in Sevier, Knox, and Blount Counties.  “After 24 years of wildlife law enforcement, I’m looking forward to the new challenges,” said Mr. Sexton.
