Two people are in police custody after a chase and then a crash on Shallowford Road late Tuesday night.
At approximately 11:45 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to the Highway 58 Coin Laundry at 4767 Highway 58 on reports of a robbery.
The victim was folding laundry and was approached by two male suspects. One of the suspects struck the victim in the face and demanded the keys to her vehicle. The suspects fled in the victim's Silver Chevy Trailblazer.
Early Wednesday morning, Chattanooga Police were called to 2124 Shepherd Road at the Shepherd Recreation Center concerning suspicious items which had been dumped in the parking lot. It was possible that these items were related to the robbery on Highway 58.
During their investigation, the police observed a vehicle drive by matching the description of the Trailblazer stolen in the robbery. Chattanooga Police began to follow the suspect vehicle when it accelerated at a high rate of speed toward Shallowford Road.
The vehicle failed to properly negotiate the turn onto Shallowford Road and jumped a curb, crashing into a tree and two parked cars. Both suspects fled on foot at this point and were quickly apprehended by police. A firearm was recovered during the arrest. Investigators are attempting to determine the involvement of the suspects in the robbery. No injuries were reported from the pursuit or crash.
Austin Bumpass, 18, and a juvenile were arrested.
Chattanooga Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call 423-698-2525.
