Logan Workman was a workhorse for Soddy-Daisy’s baseball program in 2015, and expects to be doing the same thing this season, his final year with the Trojans.

“Logan is a great kid with great character and we are looking forward to watching him progress at the next level,” Trojans coach Jared Hensley said, “but he also knows we have some work to do here first.”

Workman, a catcher/pitcher for Soddy-Daisy, recently secured his career will be extended by signing a baseball scholarship with Lee University, where he’s expected to start out as a closer for the Flames.

“To choose Lee was more about what’s best for me in continuing my baseball career,” Workman said. “Lee offered me a better opportunity academically and athletically than the other schools.”

Workman said he considered Bryan College, Carson-Newman University and Columbia State Community College before deciding to join the Flames, coached by 12-year veteran Mark Brew, who has 400-plus career wins.

Lee went 30-18 in 2016 and finished sixth in the Gulf South Conference. The year before Lee was 39-19, won the NCAA Mid-East Region for the second straight year and finished runner-up to Fresno Pacific in the Division II World Series.

“They (Lee coaches) asked me what’s my best position,” Workman said. “I said relief pitching. That’s where they plan to use me and that suits me well.”

Workman said he plans to study secondary education because, “I want to be a teacher and coach.”

As a junior Workman was 3-0 on the mound. He worked 21 innings, recorded 26 strikeouts and opponents batted .205 against him.

The Trojans were eliminated from the postseason.

A year earlier, Soddy-Daisy lost to East Hamilton in the district tournament title game, but bounced back to drop the Hurricanes’ and won the Region 3-3A championship. The Trojans knocked off Smyrna in the sectional and advanced to the state tournament in Murfreesboro.

Soddy-Daisy opened with a win against Hendersonville, but lost to Hardin Valley and Memphis Bartlett and a bid for the school’s second state baseball title was over. The Trojans’ only title came in 1977.

Workman said the Trojans’ ultimate goal is to win a state championship and “end the drought since our last one.”

That’s not an easy task.

“As long as we stay together as a team and concentrate on our strengths and don’t worry about our weaknesses, I think we can accomplish our goal.”

Added Hensley, “Logan has been a big part of our success the last few years and we are extremely proud of him and the opportunity he has in front of him.”
