Collegedale is the first municipality in Hamilton County to receive a grant for its participation in Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam’s health initiative, “Healthier Tennessee.”
Collegedale got behind the plan by organizing the Collegedale Wellness Council called “Collegedale Inspires.” It has been chaired by Commissioner Phil Garver and co-chaired by Mayor Katie Lamb who have gotten community members involved and have targeted three places to reach the public: where people work, worship and learn.
The goal is to help improve the health of the community focusing on increasing exercise, improving nutrition and stopping the use of tobacco. The city will receive a check for $5,000 for investing in this program. It is a simple approach that will have powerful results, said Commissioner Garver.
A resolution was passed at the commission meeting Monday night for the city to participate in the state pool’s property conservation matching grant program. It will be used for the E-Commerce site that Collegedale has already established. Two parking spaces in front of city hall, with a camera aimed at them, have been designated an e-commerce safety site. The intended use, for example, would be a place where people can come to exchange items that are being bought or sold on Craigslist. Collegedale will receive $2,500 from the grant and will be responsible for contributing the same amount for a total of $5,000 to pay for the project.
Mayor Lamb, Vice Mayor Ted Rogers and Commissioner Debbie Baker were congratulated for winning their re-elections. The re-induction ceremony will take place at the next commission meeting on Monday, Dec. 5.
Mayor Lamb said some political signs are still up and she would like for them to be removed to clean up the city. City Manager Rogers said he would contact the candidates and have them taken down. If not done, the city will take over and get rid of them.
It was announced that the Collegedale Christmas parade will be on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m.
