Lee University Wind Ensemble
Lee University School of Music will present the final Wind Ensemble concert for the semester on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.
Review for the concert:
The concert will feature classical and modern music with compositions by Bela Bartok, Frank LaRocca, and Percy Grainger, among others. Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite” will be featured, as well as Frank Erickson’s “Aria Cantabile.”
A stirring march by Sousa and an energetic overture, “Scootin’ on Hardrock,” by the conductor Dr. David Holsinger round out the program. As a change of pace, the encore will feature not a march by Sousa, but rather a piece written for and played by the Sousa band as an encore for many years, according to Dr. Holsinger, professor of music and founder of the Wind Ensemble.
“On a personal note, it is wonderful to spend more time on the podium this year as I continue to regain my health from last year’s crippling stroke,” said Dr. Holsinger. “This group of musicians is certainly part of that encouragement my spirit has needed. Our first concert this year may have been the most focused, consistent, and musical ‘first concert of the year’ in my 17 years at Lee.”
The ensemble will be directed by Dr. Holsinger as well as associate conductor and wife Winona Gray Holsinger and graduate conducting students Timothy Linley and Seok Joon Keun.
This year’s edition of the Lee Wind Ensemble features 52 wind and percussion musicians from a number of different majors on campus. It is an auditioned ensemble with a mission for performance of a diversified repertoire of classic and modern wind and percussion literature.
In February 2017, the ensemble will travel to the Tennessee All-East Band and Orchestra senior clinic to play the Friday evening guest concert for the nearly 1,000 participants.
