6th Woodmore Elementary Student Dies From Bus Crash; Mother Says She Complained Repeatedly About Bus Driver

  • Wednesday, November 23, 2016

A sixth Woodmore Elementary student has died from Monday afternoon's horrendous crash.

He is Keontae Wilson, 8.

Five of the children on the bus on Talley Road died at the scene or soon after. They were Cordayja Jones, 9; D/Myunn Brown, 6; Zyaira Mateen, 6; Zoie Nash, 9, and Zyanna Harris, 10.

Four students remain in critical condition from the wreck on Talley Road in Brainerd.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Mateen, mother of one of the victims and of two others who were seriously injured, told NBC News she had been complaining since August about driver Johnthony Walker.

She said after her children complained about Walker, she took the matter to the school, the school board and Durham School Services, his employer.

Ms. Mateen said she wrote a letter about the problems with Walker, and the principal read it to him in front of her. She said his response was to say he "would do it again."

She said Walker would sometimes slam on the brakes on purpose, causing the young riders to hit their heads.

A release from the Hamilton County Department of Education said, "It is with great sadness that we share the news that a sixth student has succumbed to injuries sustained in Monday’s school bus crash on Talley Road."

Interim Superintendent Dr. Kirk Kelly issued this statement tonight: “Our hearts grieve with another family this evening as we mourn the loss of one more of our precious students. I ask everyone to join me in a silent prayer this evening to remember another innocent child who has gone home.”

An additional charge of vehicular homicide will be added to the five facing driver Johnthony Walker.
