7 Die As Deadly Storms Hit Tennessee Valley Overnight

Heavy storms moved through the Chattanooga area and Tennessee Valley early Wednesday morning, leaving destruction and claiming seven lives.  

Two people died in Polk County, a husband and wife.  Police went door to door in many areas to check on residents.  Police said many with injuries, including some critical, were taken to area hospitals.

Only one wall was left of the Ocoee Post Office.

Two brothers died in a house fire in Meigs County that is believed to be storm-related. 

Highway 411 was closed in both directions at Highway 64.

West Polk County Volunteer Fire and Rescue has reported several buildings have been destroyed, including one of its fire stations. 

Polk County High School was opened as a shelter. 

Deaths have been confirmed at the small community of Rosalie, Ala., in Jackson County where a mobile home collapsed, killing three and injuring two.  Jackson County Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen estimated that 16-20 structures were destroyed in Rosalie, including homes, businesses and churches.

Athens, Tn., also suffered heavy damage, including a Save-A-Lot grocery. It came through about 1:30 a.m.

Another tornado struck in Whitwell, damaging a number of homes and other buildings, including a church.

Erlanger Hospital reported treating 13 storm victims, including three who were in critical condition.

EPB reported there were 1,100 without power in Red Bank and many other areas are confirming downed power lines. 

“I am extremely saddened by the devastation left by last night’s severe storms in Polk and McMinn counties,” said Rep. Chuck Fleischmann.  “My thoughts and prayers are with the people of these wonderful counties, especially the families who lost loved ones, those injured and the first responders who are currently on the ground.  Please know I am monitoring this situation closely and am in constant contact with local officials.”
