The Salvation Army of the Greater Chattanooga Area is still serving emergency personnel and residents of McMinn County after an E-F2 Tornado swept through their neighborhoods over night on Tuesday. Though it is the busiest time of the year for The Salvation Army with Angel Trees ending this weekend and fundraising through the red kettles continuing to be slightly down, when disaster strikes, The Salvation Army mobilizes its disasters teams and serves regardless. Many who normally volunteer in The Salvation Army Coffeehouse or volunteer by ringing bells are busy Thursday serving meals and beverages and comforting their neighbors.
"My heart continues to be encouraged by the love and compassion I have found in the Cleveland Corps and the Chattanooga Area Command," said Major Robert Lyle, newly-appointed area commander of the Greater Chattanooga Area Salvation Army. "Everyone has jumped right in and are eagerly serving, doing the most good! This is a special community!"
The Salvation Army served just over 800 meals on Wednesday to the Athens, Ocoee and Englewood communities. They are continuing to feed at the command post and in the neighborhoods affected in McMinn County on Thursday.
Officials said, "The Salvation Army asks for your prayers for our neighbors in Jackson, Polk and McMinn Counties. The Salvation Army also needs your support for the relief efforts with monetary donations to
csarmy.org, 1-800-Sal-Army, or you may text TNSTORMS to 41444. Please earmark donations for TN Storms."
