Familiar - And Unusual - Chattanooga Landmarks Featured In New Hiener Picture Book

  • Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Some well-known Chattanooga landmarks are featured in the new historic photo book of the Paul Hiener Collection published by Chattanoogan.com.

It is now available at Zarzour's Restaurant on the Southside.

One picture of interest shows a "Dangerous Keep Out" sign at the Fireman's Fountain. For several years, alligators were kept in the pool at the small park across from the County Courthouse.

The new book features a wide range of interesting old Chattanooga pictures ranging from the Civil War to local personalities.

Mr. Hiener, a longtime Chattanooga printer and lifelong resident, collected over 3,000 historic pictures of his beloved hometown. He made some of the photos available through a four-volume set called Chattanooga Yesterday and Today. The Hiener family in April 1985 donated the more than 3,000 historical Chattanooga photographs in his collection to the Chattanooga Public Library. They were eventually cataloged and are now viewable on the library's website.

This book, which is fully indexed, is a perfect companion to The Remarkable Stokes Collection previously published by Chattanoogan.com.

An edition of 1,500 copies of the 253-page Hiener book was printed by College Press at Collegedale.

The photo book, which includes over 700 photos, is in an 11x8 1/2 format with a soft cover.

The price of the book is $35, which includes the sales tax.

Zarzour's Restaurant is on Rossville Avenue behind Fire Hall #1, which is on Main Street across from Niedlov's Bakery.

For those who want it mailed, add $5 and list where copies should be mailed. Send checks for $40 made out to Chattanoogan.com.

Mail your orders to:

John Wilson

Chattanooga, Tn., 37403

Shannon at Zarzour's still has some copies of the Remarkable Stokes Photo Collection and the Chattanooga Railroad Book, also published by Chattanoogan.com. There are only about 200 copies remaining of each of these two photo books.

All of the books are $35 each, or $40 when mailed.
