Zach Wamp: Coach Fulmer, We Need You In Chattanooga - And Response (2)

  • Thursday, December 15, 2016

Coach Fulmer, we would love for you to come to Chattanooga fulltime.

I heard a rumor today that Coach Phillip Fulmer might be interested in the UTC head coaching position.

“Phillip,” as Thunder Thornton says, is a world-class gentleman, father, businessman and one heck of a coach.

He is still young by today’s standards and loves the Scenic City.  His daughter is already here so grandchildren have to be a motivation.

Furthermore, Coach Huesman leaves the program in a fabulous position for even greater heights.  I am not a football expert like Randy Smith, Quake or my son Weston, but I know people and, if Coach Phillip Fulmer would come to Chattanooga and be our head football coach, we would all be the better for it. Go Mocs.

Please don't let this happen, Mr. Blackburn. Coach Huesman has gotten the football program in very good shape and we don't need a 70+ year old coach who has already wrecked another program.

Please find a  much younger head coach who is aggressive and who will recruit lights out.

Zach,

As much as I respect you, having been your catcher when you were the pitcher for the 8-9 year-old East Ridge Giants, you are off base on wanting Phil Fulmer for head coach at Chattanooga. UTC needs a proven FCS coach, a younger coach who can hit the road scouting and recruiting players. Phil Fulmer's days have come and gone.

There is a consensus that FBS coaches do not make great transitions to FCS coaching, they don't understand how things work at the FCS level. For example, not that many years ago the Mocs were playing on a field with a unique turf, requiring new different shoes. The school couldn't afford them so the parents got together and purchased the shoes. Do you think at UT Knoxville the parents have to purchase the players equipment? No, Fulmer, or Butch Jones, just walks in and tells them what is needed and checks are written. Just in the last month members of the Mocs Club received emails asking for donations to help fund the teams trip to Sam Houston State in the FCS playoffs. Do they do that in SEC cities? I think not. FBS coaches just don't understand how to get things done at FCS.

Chattanooga needs as I said, a proven FCS coach, a coach like Jamey Chadwell at Charleston Southern, who has had his team in the Top 10 with very limited funds, worse facilities and worse fan support than most FCS schools.  We don't need retreads from FBS looking for a few paychecks as they head into retirement.
