Suhas Gummadi Is Chattanooga Chess Champion

  • Tuesday, December 20, 2016

The Chattanooga Chess Club held the annual club championship and the 2016 Club Open Championship was a success with a clear winner in 14-year-old Suhas Gummadi of East Hamilton High School scoring three wins out of three games.  This makes him the youngest champion in recent history, and possible the youngest Chattanooga Chess Champion in the history of the event.  Four players shared Second Place with two points out of three games.

In the first ever Scholastic Section of the tournament, 14 players participated, ranging in age from kindergarten to 6th grade.  Nasi Rahman, 6th grader at McCallie School, and Nivas Gummadi, 4th grader from East Brainerd Elementary, both had perfect scores, with three wins out of three games.  Nasi won the playoff game against Nivas to capture first place.

Special thanks to the downtown YMCA and Suzanne Haile-Grueser for accommodating the tournament.
