Helen McConkey Steele, 89, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, died on Saturday, December 3, 2016, in a local health care facility.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and wife, a member of Red Bank Baptist Church, a CONTACT volunteer for over 20 years, a foster mother to 19 children, a graduate of the Baroness Erlanger School of Nursing, a member of the Nursing Association and retired registered nurse from Erlanger Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Edward Steele, brothers, Kernon and Alfred McConkey and parents, Lawrence McConkey and Georgia Collins.

Survivors include her husband, Charles “C.E.” Steele, daughter, Jodi (Ricky) Gray, grandchildren, Emily Gray Simmons and Austin Cody Gray, great-granddaughter, Ariya Claire Gray, special friends, “The Girls”, Tim and Ruth Shrum and Hazel Tucker and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Reverend Bill Harvey officiating.  Burial services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Red Bank Baptist Church Nursery, Red Bank.
