UTC Women Halt The Hatters 66-55

  • Monday, December 5, 2016
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team put together a 16-0 run that stretched between two halves to run past Stetson 66-55 Monday night at the McKenzie Arena. The Mocs improve to 5-6 on the year and the Hatters fall to 8-2.

Junior Chelsey Shumpert (Paducah, Ky.) started the run in the second quarter with a jumper to get the Mocs to within three points at 30-27 with 3:16 to play in the period. She tied it up a minute later with Chattanooga’s first 3-pointer of the game and then gave the Mocs the lead for good with a fastbreak layup at the halftime buzzer.

The third quarter began with Shumpert scoring her ninth point of the game with a jumper and the Mocs would stretch the lead to 41-30 at the 5:59 mark of the frame on a layup from senior Queen Alford (Decatur, Ga.).

Stetson responded with a 10-3 run to get to within four points, 49-45 at the 8:27 mark of the fourth quarter, but that’s the closest it would get the remainder of the game.
Chattanooga rebuilt its lead into double figures with 17 points behind junior Keiana Gilbert who had seven of her 13 points in the run.

Chattanooga was 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the field in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hatters 20-14 in the period and closed the game making 26-of-59 overall.

Senior Jasmine Joyner (Southaven, Miss.) was on the verge of a triple-double for the second time this season with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots. Prior to the game, she was recognized for reaching 1,000 points and breaking the Southern Conference blocked shots record while the Mocs were on the road.

Shumpert scored 15 points for the Mocs and was one of four players in double figures on the night. She and freshman Lakelyn Bouldin (Spencer, Tenn.) combined for 11 of the Mocs 16 assists and four of their seven steals. Bouldin had 12 points and five rebounds and Gilbert chipped in 13 points with five rebounds. Alford had a game-high 11 rebounds, getting six on the offensive end while scoring seven points.

The Mocs, who lead the nation in fewest fouls per game (10.7), committed just five on the night.

“I think it’s one of our attributes,” Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster said. “We lead the country in that category. We will try to keep that up and ride status quo.

“Assist-to-turnover ratio was terrific,” Foster added. “Not fouling was also terrific. They are a physical team and we handled that well. Not getting discouraged because they are physical and play hands on. There are some things we talk about on a regular basis and that’s one of them.”

The teams played even in the paint with 34 points apiece but the Mocs had an 18-4 advantage on points off turnovers, forcing the Hatters in 13 while committing just seven miscues on the night. Chattanooga converted 17 offensive rebounds into 16 points compared to Stetson’s 10 points off nine turnovers.

All 66 of the Mocs points came from the starters with three players off the bench combined for just 10 minutes of playing time. Stetson got 15 from their bench led by Kennedi Colclough’s 10. Brianti Saunders had a team-high 11 points with five assists and Myka Johnson-Matthews added10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Stetson was 25-of-53 on the night and had just three 3-pointers while converting on its only two free throw attempts.

The Mocs will break for exams and return to action Tuesday, December 20 at Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers, Fla. The next home game will be against No. 1 Notre Dame on December 27.
