Former Nashville Councilman Announces Bid For Chair Of The Tennessee Democratic Party

  • Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Jamie D. Isabel, Sr. former Nashville City Councilman and a former member of the Tennessee Democratic executive committee, announces his intent to run for chairman of the Tennessee Democratic party.

Over the last two weeks he has contacted the 66 members of the Executive Committee for their support.

"Mr. Isabel is enthusiastically presenting his plans to rebuild the party similar to the success under the leadership of former Governor Ned Ray McWherther," officials said.

Mr. Isabel said, "Our party has lost its way about addressing issues that are very dear and close to the blue collar worker  of Tennessee. Governor McWherter was a governor that cared about the issues that impacted Tennesseans and their families."

Mr. Isabel served on the State Democratic executive committee for nearly 14 years and has been a member of the Democratic finance council.  Mr. Isabel said he will not accept the salary when he wins the chair position.

"As a moderate democrat, successful small businessman, and native Tennessean Mr. Isabel clearly understands the needs of our communities both in urban and rural areas," officials said.

Mr. Isabel said, "Tip O’Neill was right when he said all politics is local. And I feel the current party leadership is clueless about the needs and concerns of the people of Tennessee. They are not aware of or have a firm understanding of the bread and butter issues that affect Tennesseans each and every day."

Official said, "Mr. Isabel is a strong supporter of economic inequalities, job creation, and that our schools be accountable to the students and tax payers. He also believes our streets must be safe in urban areas as well as rural areas of the state. His campaigning for the position will carry him across the state of Tennessee talking with committee members and citizens, sharing how we can recapture the state-wide enthusiasm experienced under Governor McWherther.

"Mr. Isabel does not lack confidence. With his leadership and results-driven management, he intends to reclaim fellow democrats, independents, and some republicans members. In two years, his vision and work in the fields, streets, highways, and back-roads will influence votes for the US Senate, the Governor’s office, and a majority of State Senate and House seats.  If elected, Mr. Isabel will be the first African-American to run and serve as chair of the party.

"He and his wife have successfully owned their corporation for over 20 years. They have three kids. He most recently received the FBI Director's National Distinguished Community Leadership award from Director Jim Comey last May.  Mr. Isabel is a native Memphian and is a resident of Nashville. Mr. Isabel was a key fundraiser and organizer for the "Bill Freeman for Mayor" campaign.  Bill Freeman was one of 18 people appointed to serve on an advisory committee for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by President Barack Obama.
