Georgia Northwestern Is Top Technical College In Georgia For Dual Enrollment Students For Third Straight Year

  • Wednesday, February 10, 2016

For the third consecutive year, Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) has the largest number of dual enrollment students out of all of the technical colleges in the state of Georgia according to the “High School Collaborative Enrollment: Academic Year 2016” Report issued by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG).

The report shows that GNTC had 1,767 dual enrollment students, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College was the second highest with 1,426 students, and Southern Regional Technical College was third with 1,355 students.

“We have an outstanding High School Initiatives team who, while very small in proportion to the number of students served, is able to serve our area high school and home school students,” said Stuart Phillips, vice president of Student Affairs at GNTC.

Dual enrollment provides high school students with the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. While dual enrollment has been possible in the State of Georgia since 2009, major changes were made in July of 2015 with the introduction of the Move On When Ready (MOWR) dual enrollment program that expanded opportunities for students.

The new MOWR dual enrollment program streamlines the various existing dual enrollment options, such as ACCEL, HOPE Grant, etc., into one program with one funding source. This makes it easier for students and parents to navigate and take advantage of the available options to enroll in college courses while still in high school. MOWR also includes provisions to help remove some of the financial barriers that may prevent some students from participating in dual enrollment.

“The Move On When Ready legislation passed last year has paved the way for students to take advantage of this incredible opportunity at little to no cost to the parents,” said Mr. Phillips.

Many MOWR courses also offer students the opportunity to earn an industry certificate. This gives students the option of either entering the workforce upon graduation from high school or continuing their education at a TCSG or University System of Georgia college. Either way, they begin their selected career path with a head start.
