The Salvation Army annual Mardi "Bra" party is Friday, providing homeless women with bras, panties and feminine hygiene products
The Salvation Army realizes that most shelters are typically run by men and the majority of guests are men. Feminine hygiene items and bras are rarely donated because they are pricey and often forgotten. This is very challenging for homeless women, said officials.
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary became aware of this need and created the idea of a "Mardi Bra Party," a party where bras, panties, and feminine hygiene items could be handed out to the female homeless guests.
The Second Annual Mardi Bra Party will be held on Mardi Gras, Friday at 1 p.m. at The Salvation Army ReCreat Café at 800 McCallie Ave. To date, 53 homeless women have RSVP’d for the party.
"We are still collecting items for the party," states Major Teresa Newsome, associate area commander of the Greater Chattanooga Area. "Even after the Mardi Bra Party we will continue to collect these items since they are needed year-round."
