Cleveland State's bats came to life in the ninth inning Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars entered the final inning of their game at Gordon State College down 8-2 before their offensive rally.
"It was a great comeback," said head coach Mike Policastro. "The team stayed with it all game long and did not play the scoreboard."
Cleveland State (3-1) started well putting up a run in each of the first two innings, but Gordon State scored eight unanswered runs.
The Cougars put together eight hits and three walks in the top of the ninth.
Freshmen centerfielder Devin Gardner, first baseman Sean McDermott and third baseman Billy Brand each finished with two runs batted in. Gardner and Brand also finished with two runs scored and three hits each.
Gorden State (1-4) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth scoring twice. The tying run attempted to score on a single to freshman left fielder Jordan Ransom, who threw out the runner at the plate on a relay to Brand to freshman catcher Koltyn Plumb.
Sophomore Matt Henshaw then came in relief striking out the last batter to get the save. Freshman Parker Cochran earned his first collegiate victory pitching 2/3 of an inning striking out one allowing no runs in middle relief.
"Our bullpen hung on to get the win and earn the save," said Policastro.
The Cougars take the field again at Gordon State College tomorrow afternoon in a double header for the final two games of the series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
