Cleveland State Cougars Split With Gordon State

  • Saturday, February 13, 2016
The Cougars of Cleveland State split their double header this afternoon at Gordon State College.

Cleveland State (4-2) lost game one 7-6, but took the rubber match 6-2 winning the series.

"We let game one slip away," said head Coach Mike Polilcastro.  "Our goal was to win the series and we battled all weekend coming back from deficits in winning two games."

In game one, the Cougars went up 2-0 in the top of the second.  Freshsman firstbaseman Sean McDermott led off the inning with a double and was driven in by sophomore designated hitter Austin Phillips on a double.
Phillips later scored on a single from freshman catcher Hagan Kennedy.

Gordon State College (2-5) scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.  Phillips drove in his second run of the game on a single in the top of the fifth to tie it up.  McDermott later scored in the inning for his second run to retake the lead.

Gordon State tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth.  Cleveland State went ahead after Kennedy hit a solo home run for his second RBI of the afternoon.  The Cougars added an insurance run on a sac fly from McDermott.

In the bottom of the seventh, and last inning due to the double header schedule, Gordon State's sophomore firstbaseman Ty Hobbs drove in two runs on a double and later scored the game winning run in walk off fashion.

Cleveland State finished game one with a five hit advanage, but commited three errors defensively.

In game two, the Cougars started in a hole after a two run first inning from Gordon State.  Sophomore firstbaseman Drew Curtis tied it up in the top of the second on a two run single.

Freshman catcher Christian Burnett doubled in the top of the fourth to bring home freshman left fielder Jordan Ransom giving Cleveland State a 3-2 lead.  The Cougars went on to score one in the top of the fifth and two in the sixth.

Sophomore pitcher Colton Morgan earned the victory pitching a complete game five hitter allowing one earned run striking out eight and walking three.

"Colton dominated the game," said Policastro.  "Offensively we were able to put together good at bats."

Cleveland State takes the field again Wednesday at Georgia Highlands College.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
