Local Students Sweep 1st Place In Chess Regionals

The Region 2 Chess Tournament, which includes 25 counties from Tennessee, was held over the weekend in Cleveland.  

Students from the Chattanooga area took first place in all four sections.  The top eight players in each section qualify to go to the State Finals. 

In the Primary section, which is kindergarten through third grade, Akhil Giddaluri from Brainerd Baptist School took first place with a perfect score.  Akhil’s brother, Nikhil, also qualified for state by tying for fourth place.  

In the Elementary section, Sonny Ravinder from McCallie School took first place, also with a perfect score.  Adrian Andreescu from Nolan Elementary tied for third place and qualified for the state championship. 

In the Junior High Section, George Andreescu from Signal Mountain and Suhas Gummadi from East Hamilton met in a one game playoff, with Suhas taking first place.  Thomas Nimon also qualified for state, finishing one point back, tied for third place.  

In the High school section, Kaleb Gosdin from McCallie School repeated as region champion and looks to finish strong in the state tournament as one of the highest ranked players in Tennessee.  

The Tennessee State Finals takes place this Saturday at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville.
