Police arrested Jered M. Shoemate, 33, Monday for allegedly refusing to stop during a car chase, striking two police vehicles with his car, and resisting arrest.

Shoemate is charged with driving left of center, felony reckless endangerment, felony evading arrest, two counts of aggravated assault with vehicle, resisting arrest, and driving with a suspended license.

An officer reported seeing the defendant driving on the wrong side of the road in the 2800 block of McCallie Avenue around 9:10 p.m. on Friday. The officer turned his emergency equipment on and followed Shoemate, who was driving a white Nissan Maxima.

Shoemate continued driving westbound through the Brainerd tunnels. “The driver refused to stop and continued weaving from side to side on the road, endangering all the civilian drivers on the road,” the officer reported.

More officers attempted to stop Shoemate by deploying spike strips on Lee Highway at Hickory Valley Road. But Shoemate swerved to miss the strips and tried to strike one of the police cars, the report said.

Police deployed a second set of spike strips on Lee Highway at Shallowford Road. These deflated both the Nissan’s right tires. But Shoemate kept driving north and struck a police car in the 700 block of Lee Highway.

Then he turned left into a parking lot, hit another police car, and came to a stop. Police said he refused to get out of his car and resisted arrest. They used a taser gun on him twice before they were able to handcuff him.

According to the report, “The driver refused to stop for approximately 10 miles on Brainerd Road and Lee Highway.”

After being checked out at Erlanger Hospital, authorities took him to the Hamilton County Jail.

Shoemate, who had been driving on a suspended license, later confessed to having ingested crack cocaine.
