Volunteer For Civil War Trust Park Day 2016

  • Friday, March 18, 2016

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park joins the Civil War Trust in inviting the public to participate in the annual Park Day on Saturday, April 2.

The Civil War veterans of Chickamauga and Chattanooga came together in 1890 to commemorate the battles by preserving a park. In 1916, a new agency—the National Park Service—emerged which would eventually take over the work of preserving the memories of these soldiers.

"One hundred years later, the National Park Service celebrates its Centennial and looks to a second century of preserving America’s treasures.

By connecting with and creating the next generation of park visitors, supporters, and advocates, the National Park Service aims to carry the visions of the national park founders forward—and hopes you will join," officials said.

Civil War Trust Park Day is a nationwide volunteer effort aimed at preserving Civil War sites across the country, created by the Civil War Trust, underwritten with a grant from History and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Projects this year at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park include: battlefield landscape restoration, a trail reroute away from historic earthworks, and trash collection. All projects will begin at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. Glass House Collective, a partner organization, will host a trash collection day at the base of Missionary Ridge near Sherman Reservation on Missionary Ridge.

Project day registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center, 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe. Projects will be completed between noon-1 p.m. and will include a special interpretive program about the work area. All volunteers will receive a special Civil War Trust t-shirt, as well as a free lunch provided courtesy of the Friends of the Park.

Long pants and sturdy, close-toed shoes are required for all projects. Bringing your own gloves is recommended, but gloves and other personal protective equipment will be supplied by the park.

"Please be sure to wear weather appropriate clothing—the project will continue rain or shine," officials said.

To pre-register or for more information, contact park Volunteer Coordinator Will Sunderland 423-752-5213x137 or william_sunderland@nps.gov) or visit the park website at www.nps.gov/chch.
