Police Make 4 Major Arrests In Separate Cases On Saturday

  • Monday, March 28, 2016
Chattanooga Police said officers made four major arrests on Saturday.

In an incident at 2:36 p.m., Officer Ryan Vanderpool responded to 1107 North Hickory St. on a suspicious vehicle call.  En route, dispatch advised of a white truck and a black Nissan full of juveniles who were hanging out of the windows and driving recklessly down North Hickory Street.

After this information was given, a sergeant keyed up on the radio and advised that these vehicles matched the description of a reported carjacking that occurred Friday.

Once Officer Vanderpool got in the area, he observed a dark blue Nissan in the 2100 block of Wilson Street with people hanging out of the windows and heading west. He was still several blocks away when he observed the reckless activity and attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but was unable to do so.

After continuing to check the area for the vehicle he spotted a dark blue Nissan pulling into a driveway in the 2100 block of Laura Street.

Dispatch ran the tag, and it came back as a stolen carjacked vehicle.

Once back up arrived on the scene, all five teens were ordered out of the vehicle and detained.

Investigator Wilbur McLean with the robbery division responded to the scene, processed the vehicle, and took over the investigation.

In an incident at 6:22 p.m., officers observed a gold Chrysler Sebring with expired registration, traveling in the 1800 block of Wilson Street. Police conducted a traffic stop and discovered the driver was Donnell Clayton Powell.

While speaking to Powell, police could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Police asked Powell if there was anything in the vehicle that police needed to know about. He advised that he had a sandwich bag that contained marijuana in his right front pocket of his jeans. Police advised Powell to reach into his pocket and retrieve the marijuana.

Powell handed police a sandwich bag approximately 1/3 full.

Powell was then placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

Once in custody police asked again if there was anything else in the vehicle. Powell advised police that there was a pistol underneath the front passenger seat.

During a search of the vehicle police found a Hi-point semi-auto pistol under the front passenger seat, a black bag that contained around 50 bags of marijuana individually packaged in sandwich bags, which is consistent with resale. Also in the bag was a small chap stick container with a brown sticky paste inside, and a vaporizer. The brown sticky substance is consistent with butane hash oil (Earwax).  Also in the side pockets of the bag was a large amount of cash totaling $865. Police seized the money and all the contents of the bag and placed it into property.

Powell was charged with possession of marijuana for resale, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and expired registration.

At 10:15 p.m., Officer Ryan Lynn responded to a report of a possible narcotics violation at Staybridge Suites at 7015 Shallowford Road.

Upon arrival, Officer Lynn could smell the odor of marijuana coming through the door and made contact with two individuals.  Inside a room were Moneesha Evans and Daryl Cooper.

Officer Lynn conducted a field investigation and discovered over four pounds of marijuana and over $30,000 in cash wrapped up in rubber bands.

The couple was placed under arrest and read their rights. Neither would speak with police.

They were taken to the Hamilton County Jail and charged with possession of a Schedule VI narcotic.

At 12:23 a.m., Officer Trevor Creighton responded to 343 13th Ave. for an alarm call. Once on scene police found a window had been broken on the right hand side of the house.

At this point police had dispatch attempt to make contact with the homeowners who stated that no one was supposed to be inside the home.

Police then made entry inside the residence through the busted out window, and, while clearing the home, police found a black male suspect hiding under the bed in the master bedroom. He was taken into custody.

Police attempted to identify the man at the scene but were unable to find him in the system, and he had no identification on his person. He refused to answer any questions.

He was later identified as Antione Devon Smith, 18.

Smith was charged with burglary and vandalism.
