Cleveland Police Department Receives Donations For Bullet And Stab-Proof Vests For Canines

  • Wednesday, April 13, 2016

The canine officers of the Cleveland Police Department will now have the protection of bullet and stab proof vests.

More than enough money was raised just two days after Mayor Tom Rowland made a public appeal.

Donations to purchase protective vests for the three canine officers of the Cleveland Police Department totaled $4,480.

Mayor Tom Rowland said the final total may be a little higher if some donations come in Thursday's mail. The extra funds will be used to purchase canine first aid packs and equipment for the handlers.

Businessmen Terry Posey, Don Corrington and Blue Ridge Mountain Outfitters each purchased a vest. The vests cost an estimated $1,200 each. The Cleveland Police Department plans to use remaining funds for first aid packs for the canines and training equipment for the handlers.

Mayor Rowland thanked the community for its generosity and care.

"This is an amazing community," Mr. Rowland said. "Many times Cleveland people have shown they have a heart for helping others and that includes our animal friends."

The question about protection for the city's three police dogs arose Monday during the Cleveland City Council's budget work session.

Mayor Rowland suggested a public appeal for donations in memory of Kathy Kinder. She served on the city's Animal Shelter Board and was known as a tireless advocate for animal wellbeing. Rowland and Councilman Richard Banks started the drive with a donation each.

Ms. Kinder's son, Stephen Kinder, received major donations from his clients at Kinder's Dog Training.

"I want to thank each and every one who donated and all those who contacted us and planned to make a contribution," Mayor Rowland said. "You have shown once again Cleveland is the city with spirit."
