  • Saturday, April 2, 2016

The Covenant women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day by picking up a pair of USA South victories on Saturday on the campus courts. Covenant knocked off Piedmont 8-1 before cruising past an undermanned Greensboro team 9-0.

Covenant moves to 12-4 overall, the best start to a season in program history, and 9-1 inside the USA South. The matches were the first for the Lady Scots since being regionally ranked No. 19 by the ITA on Thursday.

The team's two seniors, Jessica Rowe and Lindsay Geving were honored before the Greensboro match. Rowe has played the last two years, while Geving is a three-year player and has a 27-17 singles record, the third-most career victories in the program.

In Saturday's first match, Covenant took two out of three in the doubles portion before running past the visiting Lions by taking all six singles in the victory. Aly Hall and Annie DeLuca combined for an 8-2 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, while Geving and Rowe took an 8-0 win at the No. 3 spot.

In singles, Covenant dominated its way to secure the victory. Hall was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at the top spot over Durden Smith, while DeLuca won 6-3, 6-1 over Morgan Cowart at No. 2. Gracie Smith bested Amanda Blackwell in three sets 6-2, 6-6, 6-2 and Danielle Morin took out Karina Rivera 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5, Geving was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Tabea Soelter and Jennie Spielman completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Tatiana Burkett.

Covenant then cruised past Greensboro in the second match of the day. With only four available players, Greensboro defaulted at No. 3 doubles and Nos. 5 and 6 singles before the match started.

DeLuca and Geving played at the top doubles spot and won 8-1, while Rowe and Mackenzie Jones took an 8-0 victory at the No. 2 position.

Morin picked up her 10th singles victory of the year, and fourth straight, with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ashley Spivey at the No. 1 singles spot. Geving added a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Molly O'Keeffe. Masha Lanska earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 and Rowe finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Rachel Hamilton at No. 4.
