A young boy was almost shot in the head in an incident on Tuesday on E. 3rd Street, his mother said.
Instead, Darden Diaz was wounded in the hand.
The woman said the son was standing behind Diaz and the bullet was headed for his head.
Averoyan Sandridge, former boyfriend of the woman, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
Police arriving on the scene shortly before midnight found Diaz with a gunshot wound to his left hand.
The woman said she, Diaz and her son were standing in the kitchen when they heard a noise in the back yard. She said Diaz opened the door and saw something so he began to close the door. They then heard a gunshot come from the back yard. She said she heard Diaz saying he had been shot in the hand.
Police retrieved a bullet fragment from inside the house.
The woman said she and Diaz had been having domestic disputes with Sandridge since last week. She showed police a number of text messages from him asking why another man was in her home.
She said her front glass door was broken out and Sandridge texted that he did it and would fix it.
The woman said shortly after the shooting that Sandridge called and asked what was going on, saying he had seen police at her residence.
She said during the call he admitted to carrying out the shooting.
Police went to the residence of Sandridge six blocks away, and his grandparents said he was not there. However, he came out, surprising the grandparents, it was stated.
Police said he was sweating and out of breath.
He had bleach all over both of his hands, it was stated.
