Lee Track First, Second At Gulf South Championships

The Lee University men’s track and field team claimed three more individual championships to increase its team lead on the second day of the Gulf South Conference Championships at Robinson-Hale Stadium and James E. Parkman Track on the campus of Mississippi College.

The Flames have scored 113 points and lead second place Christian Brothers by 50 points heading into the final day of competition. West Alabama is in third with 34 points.

 

Josiah Schrade started the day with a first-place finish in the pole vault.

His height of 4.10 meters was 0.30 meters better than runner-up Brian Braswell of Christian Brothers and set a new Lee record. Terris Elliott was third with a height of 3.65 meters.

 

Christian Smith added a second championship after completing the hammer throw with a toss of 16.62 meters. Smith also recorded a second-place finish in the shot put.

 

Josiah Brooks and Hunter Goforth set a new Lee record in the long jump with a mark of 7.14 meters. Brooks placed second and Goforth was third. Justin Brooks gave Lee three performers in the top four with a fourth-place jump of 6.96 meters.

 

The Flames’ third championship of the day came from Camden Perez. Perez knocked four seconds off his personal record to cross the finish line at 9:24.77 to win the 3000 meter steeplechase. Less than 24 hours after winning the 10000 meter run, Seth Eagleson returned to the track to place second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:38.07. Davis Moore finished fifth (10:02.06).

 

Lee looks to maintain its lead through the final day of competition on Saturday.

 

The Lee University women’s track and field team recorded nine top-eight finishes and remain in second place following the second day of the Gulf South Conference Championships. The three-day event is being contested at Robinson-Hale Stadium and James E. Parkman Track on the campus of Mississippi College.

The Lady Flames have amassed 73 team points and trail just West Georgia (134.50 points). Christian Brothers remains in third with 27.50 points with West Alabama in fourth (18) and North Alabama in fifth (three points).


Audrey Smith and Savannah Ratcliff gave Lee two of the top three finishers first in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Smith posted a time of 11:24.23 to win the race by nearly 16 seconds over West Georgia’s Caitlyn Farrell. Ratcliff was third with a time of 12:25.63.

Earlier in the day, Miranda Broesche recorded a toss of 10.39 meters to edge Faith Shears (UWG) by 0.01 meters in the shot put to give the Lady Flames their first of two individual championships. Addie Strode finished eighth with a throw of 7.61 meters.

Broesche added a third place performance in the hammer throw. The senior recorded a distance of 35.34 meters. Strode was fourth with a mark of 18.06 meters.

Kaitlynn Kincer placed fourth (2.40 meters) in the pole vault. Kincer also finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 4.80 meters. Laura Thacker placed one spot ahead with a jump of 5.07 meters.
The Lady Flames look to make up some ground with athletes in 10 different events on Saturday.
