A Tennessee Highway Patrol vehicle was among the vehicles involved in a wreck on Saturday afternoon in which a motorcyclist was killed.
The THP said Monday there is a district attorney investigation involved.
The statement said, "In respect to the investigation of the fatal crash involving a trooper in Marion County, the Tennessee Highway Patrol is working with Assistant District Attorney David McGovern of the Marion County District Attorney’s office. This is an ongoing investigation and all inquiries shall be directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s office at #423-942-8259, attention Assistant District Attorney David McGovern."
The accident happened on Nickajack Bridge on I-24 at Jasper.
A Chattanooga man told NewsChannel 9 that he witnessed the tragic wreck. Tom Bennett said a truck was on fire and traffic was slowed.
He said a trooper came up fast to the scene and struck the motorcycle, then two other vehicles.
Mr. Bennett said, "He was a young officer. He was rushing to a non-emergency threat. The vehicle was already on fire. There was a police officer down at the end blocking the exit and traffic was moving over to the left."
The incident caused a shutdown of I-24 for several hours.
