Nashville businessman Larry Crim, CEO of Christian Counseling Centers of America Inc. and a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate statewide, has announced his campaign for U.S. Congress District 9 in Memphis in 2016.

Mr. Crim said, "The people of Memphis are in more serious need of a voice in our nation’s capitol in Washington and the state capitol in Nashville than any other city in Tennessee I’ve toured, which is why I decided to run for U.S. Congress to give the people of Memphis a voice."

Mr. Crim will be in the Democratic primary to be held Aug. 4. He said he will advance a new federal and state partnership to address the long standing problems facing citizens of Memphis.

“Who better to make a Nashville connection happen for Memphis” said Mr. Crim, “than a Nashvillian who has been reaching out to make a connection with the people of Memphis?”

For those wondering whether a Nashvillian can represent the people of Memphis in the U.S. Congress, the answer is yes. The U.S. Constitution provides a member of the U.S. House of Representatives when elected shall be an inhabitant of "that State in which he shall be chosen." {U.S. Const. Article 1 Sect 2). A congressional representative does not have to reside in the district (in Memphis) on the date of the election or for that matter after the election.  He or she must reside in the State of Tennessee.  Therefore, Mr. Crim may constitutionally either continue to reside in Nashville or move to Memphis to represent the citizens of Memphis if elected to Congress.

Mr. Crim says if elected he may move to Memphis but "it would make sense to also keep a residence in Nashville so the people of Memphis would have a Nashville connection.” Regardless, Mr. Crim pledged he will “be more visible, accessible and available to all the citizens than has been seen by the people of Memphis in a long time."

Mr. Crim said he is committed to “honoring our nation’s commitments to our country’s veterans, protecting the social security of workers who’ve paid for their retirement benefits all their lives, advancing equal educational opportunity for our youth and bringing jobs with economic improvements for all Americans residing in Memphis.”

Mr. Crim holds a master's of Public Administration from the University of Tennessee and Tennessee State University and a master of arts with a major in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University. He is the CEO of Christian Counseling Centers of America Inc. and the president of Veterans Comprehensive Network Inc.

The U.S. House of Representatives District 9 seat is held by Stephen Cohen.
