Police said multiple shots were fired "into very crowded Highway 58 traffic" in an incident a week ago.

Christopher Edward Green and Rashad Davis are facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and aggravated assault.

Joe Massengill suffered a grazing gunshot wound to his lower back during the public gun battle.

Police were summoned just before 5 p.m. to an "active shooter" in the 500 block of Highway 58.

Police found that two black males "had been shooting into traffic." They left in a white Chevrolet Impala.

Officers were told that "Rashad" was one of the shooters.

Police located the Impala at 4816 Swan Road. Davis and Green were detained at the residence and taken in for questioning.

A man afterward told police he believes that Green and Davis were gunning for him. He said he was riding his moped on Highway 58 when two occupants of the Impala began to shoot at him.

He said he tried to drive his moped into a parking lot to hide behind a dumpster.

The man said he did not actually see who shot at him, "but figured it was Rashad." He said he and Davis had fought in the past and Davis had shot at him six months earlier.

He said the Impala was identical to the one that Davis drives.

Davis said he was driving on Highway 58 when he saw a man he knows as "ot bot" - nickname for the man on the moped. He said he saw the man on the moped draw a pistol.

Police said Davis later admitted he did not see the man with a gun, but "he thought that he might shoot at him due to their history."

Davis said he pulled his Impala into the driveway to Captain D's restaurant and he and Green got out. He said he did so "to get a good shot at him."

Police said, "It was clear that Davis and Green were attempting to kill (man on the moped) due to the large number of shots fired."

Officers said the man on the moped "presented no danger" to Davis and Green.
