Lee Review Writing Contest Winners Announced

  • Thursday, April 28, 2016

Lee University’s student-run publication Lee Review announced the winners of its Young Writers Contest for middle and high school students. Emily Sloan of Troy Christian High School won first place for her poem “Trains,” and Sarah Barnette of Cleveland High School won second place for her poem “Claudius.”

The contest was facilitated by Lee Language and Literature faculty Dr. Katherine Carlson and Dr. William Woolfitt.

"I think that writing is good for students of all ages because it helps us know ourselves and the world,” said Dr. Woolfitt.

The students in Lee’s Introduction to Editing and Publishing class, along with other English majors, organized the contest, juried the entries, and chose the winners. Both poems appear in the 2016 Lee Review, also run by the Editing and Publishing class and supervised by Dr. Woolfitt.

“It’s such a delight to include middle and high school students in Lee Review,” said Hannah Mae Atherton, senior editor of Lee Review. “Our goal is to encourage their creative efforts and introduce them to the world of publishing. It was a pleasure to read through all of the wonderful submissions and see aspiring young writers finding their voices.”

Lee Review has published original pieces of creative writing and art from talented Lee students since 1991. For a copy of the 2016 Lee Review, contact the Department of Language and Literature at 614-8210.
