District 5 A-AA Champion Boyd Buchanan Boys
Ten years ago Matti Sue Nafie, then 8-years-old, was a ball girl for the district champion Collegedale girls tennis team.
Thursday afternoon, Nafie, now 18, had key wins in singles and doubles (with Britton Mcelroy) to help guide host Collegedale to a 4-2 win against Silverdale for the A-AA Region 3 District 5 title.
In the boys’ district final, Boyd Buchanan defeated Collegedale 4-1
For the Collegedale girls it was the first district title since that 2006 season as Nafie’s older sister Mary Ann was a member of that squad.
Another key win Thursday for Collegedale was Britton Mcelroy’s triumph at No.2 singles against Brittany Norwood, 6-1, 6-1, who had beaten Mcelroy twice earlier this season.

In Thursday’s match, Baylor won the doubles point and five of the six singles to improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in region play
The lone McCallie win came at No.1 singles as Taylor Burgan defeated Baylor’s Patrick Toomey, 7-5, 6-1. Toomey had beaten Burgan in three sets in a match earlier in the season.
“It was a good win for Taylor on Senior Day after losing to Patrick earlier in the season,” said McCallie coach Eric Voges, now in his 30th season as the head coach of the Blue Tornado.
“We fought hard and had chances to win a couple of other matches, but give Baylor credit for playing well.”
Baylor winners in singles were Alex Kadrie, Cooper Long, Brandon Kalie, Ethan Palisoc and Ryan Toomey.
“We played well today and now must get ready for a big match with MBA Friday,” said Baylor head coach Philip Johnson.
