UTC Softball Drops Two At UNCG

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team dropped a 9-8 back-and-forth contest and an 8-0 game to UNCG on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. UTC is 27-24 and 6-8 in Southern Conference action.

In the first game, the Spartans got on the board with one run during the first inning.

With the first hit for Chattanooga, senior Sam Taylor singled through the left side in the top of the third. Senior Alyssa Taylor followed with a single off a bunt. Then, senior Criket Blanco made it on base off a fielder's choice with Alyssa Taylor getting out at second.

To load the bases, sophomore Ashley Conner walked.
Freshman Jordan Fortel doubled to right field, batting Sam Taylor and Blanco home to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead.

UNCG answered by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead 4-2.

Then, UTC went up 6-4 after freshman Amanda Beltran came into the game in the top of the fifth and hit a grand slam on her first at bat.

The Spartans added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead once again 8-6.

In the top of the sixth, Sam Taylor and Alyssa Taylor made it home to tie it up.

UNCG's Lindsay Thomas hit a homer in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.

Sophomore Cori Jennings tossed a complete game, pitching four strikeouts with the Spartans earning five of its runs.

In the second matchup, UNCG scored three runs in the bottom of the first.

UTC had a strong defensive inning in the second. Sophomore Kailey Palazzolo tossed a strikeout for the first out. Following that, Chattanooga put together a double play from Blanco then to Alyssa Taylor and Beltran.

Fortel stepped into the circle for the Mocs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Spartans added one run in the fourth and four in the sixth.

Chattanooga wraps up its series against UNCG with a lone game Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
