Dr. Flora Tydings To Address Hamilton County Schools Top Academic Students At Superintendent's Honors Banquet

  • Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Dr. Kirk Kelly, acting superintendent, announced that Dr. Flora Tydings, president of Chattanooga State Community College, will be the keynote speaker for the 35th annual Superintendent’s Honors Banquet to be held on Tuesday.  The celebration, sponsored by Hamilton County School’s Fund for Excellence, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

The annual tribute recognizes the top 10% of each graduating class at Hamilton County’s 17 high schools. Participants are selected based on their grade point average at the end of the first semester of their senior year. This year 257 students, along with their parents, will be honored.

“It is a privilege to recognize these students for their outstanding academic achievements,” Dr. Kelly said. “These students are the future of our community and they are being honored as the best of our 2016 senior class. Their accomplishments in high school will serve them well as they build on the foundation of their education in Hamilton County Schools.”

During the celebration, students will hear from the Fund for Excellence President Sonja Millard, School Board Chairman Jonathan Welch, Assistant Superintendents Dr. Lee McDade, Dr. Robert Sharpe and Keri Randolph, and County Mayor Jim Coppinger.  The JROTC from Sale Creek High School will present the national and state colors and the Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts String Orchestra will provide special entertainment.

Along with a certificate commemorating their academic accomplishments, each student will receive a certificate affording them the opportunity to return to Hamilton County Schools as a teacher, upon successful completion of college and all the requirements for holding a Tennessee teaching license.
