The Chattanooga Fire Department plans to try to blend into the residential community with its new Fire Station 5 on Vance Street.

Executive Deputy Chief Randy Jacks and Logistics and Technology Chief Carlos Tibbs showed a number of concept design pictures to the City Council on Tuesday. They said the idea was to “try to blend in residentially with the community” and give the station “a more residential feel.” They also noted a number of access points where community members might be able to mingle with the fire department by grilling out and socializing.

Councilman Ken Smith mentioned concerns from community members about still having coverage in their area during the new station’s development.

Chief Jacks said they would be moving a truck from Station 5 to Station 4, about two miles away, and that there would be adequate coverage in the area.

Councilwoman Carl Berz praised the new station.

“This is a terrific new approach of the fire department,” she said. “This is wonderful. This is exactly what we’re looking for.”

The City Council also discussed a resolution authorizing a $100,000 contract with CDM Smith for improvements at East Lake Park.

Council members were told the park is in disarray and needs to be restored. Existing conditions at the park include an overabundance of algae and geese. The concept plan, driven by community feedback, would include providing educational spaces at the park.

Councilman Chris Anderson said, “This is a very popular project in East Lake in a park that was once, and hopefully will again, be the greatest park in Chattanooga.”
