Andrew LaPrise Quintet Performs Wynton Marsalis Tribute June 2

  • Thursday, May 12, 2016

CoPAC will presents Legends of Jazz: Andrew LaPrise Quintet performs Wynton Marsalis's “Black Codes (From the Underground)” on Thursday, June 2.

Review for the performance:

As part of the CoPAC's ongoing series of concerts in cooperation with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, this tribute will be presented to the best known jazz musician of his generation, Wynton Marsalis, and specifically to one his finest early albums, Black Codes (From the Underground).

Marsalis first came to widespread attention as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, but his career quickly took off as a leader in his own right. Marsalis has been profoundly influential as a bandleader, a soloist (in both jazz and classical music) and a composer. His impact has extended into media and education, particularly as a major force behind the highly influential Jazz at Lincoln Center series.

The band is being led by pianist Andrew LaPrise, and it is superb. In addition to the fiery young pianist, the band will feature Nathan Warner on trumpet and Alan Wyatt on saxophone, both wonderful players. Rounding out the quintet are Will Yager on bass and Hunter Deacon on drums. The band brings together three of the fertile Knoxville jazz scene's young stars (LaPrise, Yager and Deacon) with Lee University faculty members Wyatt and Warner, who are two of the southeast's most respected jazz musicians and educators.

“Our collaboration with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra has brought exceptional music to our Chattanooga audience, with a broad historic focus,” says Barking Legs co-artistic director, Bruce Kaplan. “We look forward to the continued growth and development of this series, which is now quarterly.”

The performance is on Thursday, June 2, and it begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door. Student admission is $7 at the door.

Advance purchase is available at www.barkinglegs.org. Barking Legs Theater is located at 1307 Dodds Ave. Parking is available next to the theater and across Dodds Ave.
