Cleveland State Offers Administrative Professional Technology Program

  • Friday, May 13, 2016

In an effort to be more responsive to the needs of the community,  Cleveland State Community College has redesigned its Office Systems Administration program. The new name, Administrative Professional Technology (APT), allows students to choose from a certificate or a degree with three areas of concentration—business, legal or medical.

"We are very excited about the new Administrative Professional Technology degrees and certificates,” stated Susan Webb-Curtis, Dean of Business and Technology. “The classes in these programs will equip students with the skill set needed in today's high tech offices in business, medical and legal settings. Students will take a wide variety of communication, computer and business courses that will demonstrate to a future employer that they have been well prepared for a professional office environment. They will also participate in an internship that will give them valuable experience for their resume.”

According to Associate Professor May Daniel, the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Administrative Professional Technology prepares individuals for employment in today’s workplace environment. Graduates will be equipped to adapt to the continual change that evolving technology demands.
“We met with members of the community, both in area businesses as well as other medical professionals to find out what classes our students need,” stated Daniel. “We also have a Business Advisory Council that assisted us with this task.  The Business and Technology Advisory Council meets twice a year to provide guidance for courses and programs, equipment and training needs in order to prepare our students for today’s workforce. ”
The Business Office concentration is a course of study designed to teach the skill set required in the administrative professional in today’s business office environment. Courses are designed to ensure expertise in current office procedures, software applications, editing and proofreading, critical thinking, office management, transcription and interpersonal skills. Some of the career opportunities for someone with this credential include Executive Administrative Assistant, Human Resources Assistant, Public Relations Specialist, Word Processor, Typist, Correspondence Clerk, Customer Service Representative, Office Clerk, Office Manager, Receptionist and Transcriptionist.
The Legal Office concentration prepares individuals with the opportunity for skill development in areas of software applications, electronic and routine office procedures, records management, law office management, legal document processing, communications, legal terminology and transcription. Career opportunities for this field include Administrative Assistant, Legal Secretary, Office Manager, Court Clerk, Court Reporter, Legal Transcriptionist and Court, Municipal and License Clerks.

The Medical Office concentration prepares individuals for a variety of positions in today’s medical office environment. The program provides the opportunity for development in the areas of software applications, office procedures, electronic health records, medical information management, communications, transcription and coding. Career opportunities for this field include Medical Administrative Assistant, Physician or Hospital Coder, Patient Account Representative, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Records Clerk, Hospital Ward Clerk, Medical Information Clerk and File Clerk.

Sheila Voyles, CSCC APT student, said, “It’s hard to go back to school after 15 years, but the program at CSCC is amazing because they offer both day and night classes and online classes. It really helps when you’re a working adult.”

Amanda Glenn, CSCC APT student, said, “I decided to change my career and Cleveland State afforded me the opportunity to get a degree while also maintaining my full-time job and my family life. The hybrid classes really helped me a lot. I could do most of the work at home and then attend class for one hour.”
